Coordinator's Message

Oguzhan Yilmaz

Dear parents, students & teachers,

We have started another term. This is probably the busiest term for secondary students and teachers with parent-teacher interviews, camp and the speech night to list the least.

Thank you to all parents who attended parent-teacher interviews. I suggest for parents who were unable to make it to the interviews to arrange an alternative time with relevant subject teachers by booking an appointment with the school office. Parent-teacher interviews are a wonderful way to be informed about your child's learning.

During Week 3, both secondary boys and girls went on camp. I would like to thank all Sirius College and camp staff that did a wonderful job in organising the students and making the activities fun. Learning is not something that just happens inside the classroom, it also happens outside the classroom too! Camps are a wonderful way to engage students in physical activity, learn social skills and resilience.

On the 27th of October we had an athletics carnival. I would like to extend my gratitude to teachers who made this event happen. This carnival provided students the opportunity to participate in physical activity and promote teamwork amongst students to collect points for their respective house colours.

Please do not forget that the Annual Secondary Speech and Exhibition Night is on the 11th of November. For more information please refer to the online slip that was sent to parents. This is an important school event because it enables us to gather and acknowledge the hard work and effort our students have displayed throughout the year. These events provide both students and teachers an opportunity to exhibit the work and learning that is done within our schools. This a wonderful way to see the productions yielded at school. I hope to see you there!

Year 7 & 8 English

This term the Year 7s are studying Top Drawer which is a collection of short stories. The students will be given the opportunity to create their own short story and this will be their main assessment. At present students are working on their short story plan by developing genre, setting, characters and plot.

The Year 8s this term are studying the film Remember the Titan. It's a film based on a true story of a newly appointed African-American football coach and his high school team on their first season as a racially integrated unit. The film explores the challenges and the triumphs. Towards the end of the term students will be expected to write an essay based on the film.

Brittany Sullivan

Year 9 English

This term we are studying the movie 'The Giver'. We are also comparing it to 'The Outsiders' (the book we studied in term 3). Being able to write comparatively is a VCE skill that we are practising now.

'The Giver' is about a boy named Jonas who lives in a utopian world where everyone gets along and there is no conflict. But once Jonas meets the Giver he realises that all is not what it seems.

As a part of class discussion we thought about if we would want to live in a world like Jonas' and what rules we could introduce to make our world a utopian one.

This term we are studying the movie 'The Prestige'. We are also comparing it to 'Macbeth' (the play we studied in term 3). Being able to write comparatively is a VCE skill that we are practising now.

Both films are about characters who make terrible choices to gain power and influence.

At our recent camp students learned about teamwork, which is essential to life in the workforce. Our Year 7 and 8 Boys had to complete a survival task; as though they were partisans in hiding during World War Two. The picture demonstrates how they made a success of it.

Year 8 Maths

We continued our chapter that we stopped in term 3, Geometry. Students got very high marks and proved that they can actually get the highest marks if they really try. Sevgi, Elis, Noor B., Farah and Ceyda got 100% from the chapter test. We are about to finish the book and then will start revising for the exam. I hope students study continue to work on their studies so that can can achieve high results in the exam.

This term the Year 8s are studying Geometry and Statistics. It is essential that we understand how to make sense of data. We can use Maths in our everyday life by simply checking which supermarket is the cheapest in our area or deciding whether or not we should insure the family car.

Year 9 Maths

We are about the finish the year and students are hard working to get ready for the upcoming semester exam. Boys are studying one chapter for this term: nonlinear relationships. Even though, we are covering only one chapter, it takes a lot of time to cover sub-topics and students need more time to do more exercises.

This is the third year I have taught this class for the third year and I am happy with their behaviour overall.

Boys should continue having strong friendship even after leaving the school, and have respect to their teachers all the time.

Oguzhan Yilmaz

This term the Year 9s are studying non-linear relationships. This topic is imperative for students who would like to study VCE Mathematical Methods. Students will need to recognise the shape of the graphs of these different types of relationships, and know how to transform them.

Quadratic equations are parabolic, meaning they have a symmetrical curve and its shape can be thought as the path of a ball thrown over a distance. Non-linear relationships are used extensively in physics to explore and interpret the world and how things work.

Year 9 girls are discussing their strategies to solve equations

Year 10 Maths

We live in an era where information is important. We need to be able to organise and analyse data to draw conclusions to make informed decisions. Statistics are used in all avenues of life including sports, banks, businesses, and media to list the least. For example, the census helps government ascertain where universities, hospitals and health centres need to go.

We have had a wonderful year with Year 10 girls and they really tried their best in Maths class. Girls are leaving our campus at the end of the year. I personally enjoyed teaching Year 10 girls and I hope they do well and are able to achieve their goals for the future. They are at a stage where they will make decisions determining their career and future, so I wish them all the best in their life.

The biggest news across all year levels at IDC was the Annual Intercampus Art Exhibition opened on Wednesday October 19 and held until Friday October 28.

Thankyou to all our exhibitors. Some of our students and parents turned up on the opening night and everyone was welcome to observe during the two weeks for which it was held.

Some of our students visited the exhibition on Thursday 20th October and they expressed their awe at the quality of the work.

Music

Rohan Morrison

The year 9 and 10 music students have been practicing for their concerts.

The girl's group are thinking of changing their song so that Azra can play more guitar. The song "Never forget you" is sample and synthesiser oriented song.

The boys are practicing their chords on key words. Shan is actually now able to sing and play chords simultaneously so I am pleased with his progression. Best wishes to all!

Luna Park Trip

We went to Luna Park in St Kilda on Saturday the 7th of October with the Saturday Quran class. Everyone was excited to go there because there were really fun rides to go on. Most of the people that came were from Primary. Once we arrived there, everyone went inside Luna Park to get their tickets. We all got unlimited ride tickets so that we can go on any ride as many times as we want.

Luna Park at St Kilda was very big and there were 14 different rides to go on. The two best rides that were the Great Scenic Railway and the Pharaoh's Curse were closed that day. Probably the scariest ride was The Power Surge because the seats kept on turning around when you were in the air. The Coney Island Pop Drop made your stomach feel weird when you were coming down very fast. The Street Legal Dodgems was very fun because everyone was crashing into each other.

The food and candy there was very delicious and they sold show bags full of toys. After everyone met together again and we all went back to the bus.

Luna Park at St Kilda was very fun. Thank you to all the teachers that helped for this day to be possible.
